Golf is an interesting and popular sport which originated in Scotland in the seventeenth century, although it had been in existence in one form or the other even many centuries previous to that. In most places of the world, especially the United States, it is very popular among the business community. Knowledge gained and applied provides a great starting point for the beginner, and an increase of skill for the intermediate to advanced golfer. Independent of weather, proper instruction can increase your enjoyment and decrease your score for that perfect golf game.

Tips To Improve Your Golf Backswing

Are you struggling with your golf game, particularly in driving and/or your approach towards the green? Don't worry, you are not alone. Even the great pros such as Tiger Woods have come to a point in their golfing careers wherein they went through a slump. However, golf professionals are known to videotape their swings and see where they went wrong as well as how they can improve.
Whether you are an amateur, professional, or leisurely golfer, if you want to improve on your game, you ought to study how you swing the club. It comes as no surprise that most people, including the great ones, first study their backswing and note the portion wherein they could improve. Here are some tips for you to improve your backswing and subsequently, your golf game:
First, before starting your actual swing, make sure you are properly stable in terms of your posture, stance, and alignment with the ball. With regard to your posture, it is important to be firm but relaxed; this includes the arms as well as the grip on the club.

The off arm (left arm for right handed players) should be extended and straight. There should be no bend in the arm at all; it should only be on the wrist, which should happen naturally thanks to the weight of the club. You need not have a quick backswing, since it tends to disrupt your rhythm (especially during practice).
In fact, many would tell you to have a slow backswing, provided that you're doing everything properly. This is better than a quick backswing with wrong mechanics - you will see this in how you strike the ball if you practice both types.
Finally, the old saying that practice makes perfect still holds true. If you want to have a perfect backswing, or something relatively close to it, you have to devote time to it. Muscle memory is a big factor here. Your body should "memorize" the mechanics of the backswing, including every small detail, and this can only be achieved through disciplined practice.
It would be good if you would have a training partner or a video camera to videotape your practice sessions. That way, you can review your whole swing, not only the backswing, afterwards and make the necessary adjustments.
A good swing starts with a good preparation for backswing, as well as the actual backswing itself. To improve your golf score by a few strokes, the backswing would be a great place to start.

Zen and the art of golf, as it applies to the golf swing.Zen means action with awareness, being completely in the moment. While in this state; people have described it as in a state of timelessness, complete confidence, freedom from anxiety or doubt, complete focus on just one thing. Another way athletes have described it is “being in the Zone.”
A young man had read all the books he could find about Zen.He heard about a great Zen master and requested an appointment with him to ask for teachings. When they were seated, the young man proceeded to tell the master everything he had understood from his reading, saying Zen is about this and on and on at length about his studies of Zen.
After some time the master suggested they have tea. The master began to pour tea into the student’s cup. He poured until the cup was full and kept pouring. The tea was running down the sides of the cup onto the table. The master kept pouring and the tea began to run off the table onto the floor. Finally the student couldn’t contain himself any longer and shouted “Stop! The cup is full-no more will go in!”
The master stopped pouring and said, “Just like this cup, your mind is overflowing with your own opinions and preconceptions. How can you learn anything unless you first empty your cup?”
Many golfers have read volumes about the golf swing. They have so many preconceived notions that they hear little of what the instructor has to say. This does not mean to suspend your intelligence and blindly follow the instruction. Instead, withhold judgement until after you have tried it for a while. Shanrya Roshi, a Zen Master, said “In the beginners mind there are many possibilities; in the expert’s mind there are few.” A beginner’s mind is open, eager to learn. An open mind is a more receptive and fertile mind.

Putting Training Aid, Effective Putting Training Techniques

Improving your Putting stroke
Lets start by saying that a putt of 5 to 7 feet are the putts we expect to make, yet have the most trouble with. These are the putts we need to improve on. Anyone can sink a 3 footer. If you are more than 8 feet away, the percentage of a putt sinking go down drastically to where you can accept that you will have to more than likely make a 2nd putt.
So the 4 to 6, 5 to 7 foot shot is where we want to spend our time working on improvement. It is a fact that the Pros only sink about 50% of their putts from 5 to 7 feet, so you really can not get to distraught with yourself when you miss these putts, but we can improve , so lets practice and see if we can improve our success rate for the 5 to 7 foot putt.
So you are at the local practice putting green. Grab a hand full of balls and lets get started. Drop the balls about 5 feet from the hole. We will want to concentrate on 2 major points as we putt. Our alignment and our stroke.
It is very important to have the correct alignment so we can get a straight shot. When we have our alignment squared away, we can then go on to focus on our stroke.
If you are missing strait putts with no break, your alignment is slightly off or your stroke is off. If you are missing breaking puts, your stroke may be good, but your speed may be off. It is important for this drill to find an area with no break. Lets fix our strait putts before being concerned with breaking putts.
There are a myriad of putting improvement aids on the market. The Odyssey putter uses a 2-ball technology that aids in alignment which is as I described, the most important part of putting. However, the Odyssey putter is quite expensive and you do not need to spend $239 to become a good putter. What I have found works best is a neat little aid called the 2-Way Putter Alignment System. Its a small metal gizmo with a magnet on the base that allows the 2-Way to snap right on to your existing putter head. Then you square it up over the ball or behind in the traditional 2-Ball mode and you have the 2-ball technology to use for putting practice. I recommend practicing with a putting training aid. Either the Odyssey 2-Ball putter, or the 2-Way Putter Alignment System, because the 2-Ball technology is so incredibly effective. As the 2 white circles that make up the 2-Ball technology pass through with the stroke, an imperfection in the alignment of your putting stroke shows up like a sore thumb. This is invaluable feedback to someone wanting to improve their putting.
Lets start putting, keeping our 2 concerns in mind. Alignment and stroke. Align the putter head square as best you can towards the hole. The 2-Way will help here. Remember, this is the biggest problem with poor putting and takes the most effort and time in practice to fix. Once you master the alignment, the improvement will be huge. Now make sure the putter head is going strait back on the swing. There cannot be any motion toward or away from your body.
Now we'll set a goal. We will Sink 50 in a row from between 4 to 7 feet. This will be hard to achieve, but it is possible. Remember, if you miss a single putt, you have to start over at 1.
This teaches you to putt under pressure. You know how you will feel as you get into the 40's. You will feel the pressure and you have to press on and sink the rest or you go back to 1. That is pressure. This will help you develop a great putting stroke.
As your stroke improves, you will notice that you will become more and more confident in the short putt to the point where you will be able to step back to 7 and 8 feet and farther with more confidence in your putting ability.
This putting drill will work anywhere. If you are at home or goofing off in the office. You can practice on the carpet. The point is, Alignment and Stroke. Work on that and use the technique described and before you know it, you will be an impressive putter. And its all about being impressive.

Bad Posture Ruins Good Swings

It’s true. I see this happening all the time with golfers of just about all levels.
Of course you want to feel relaxed of the golf ball as you set up to it… but not so relaxed that you’re all hunched over approaching a fetal position!
You want to be relaxed, but you want to be firm enough to support a position of good posture that will create a proper spine angle at address and throughout your golf swing.
Let’s start from the feet up as we breakdown the individual components of a good golf swing posture.
The Feet: I like to have people’s foot positioning to be just slightly ‘duck footed’. With each of your fee pointed in slight outward position, your hips will be able to rotate more comfortably on the backswing promoting a good turn and by the same token, you hips will able to rotate and clear easier as you come through the shot.
The Stance: The longer the club the wider the stance – about shoulder width for the driver – coming closer together as the clubs shorten.
The Weight Distribution: I like to couch much of my instruction based on neutral positioning. As golfers we are always making adjustments here and there, but you need to know where a ‘neutral point’ is that you can always find your way back to if needed. Distribute your weight evenly with it resting slightly on the insteps of each foot.
Legs: Knees should be slightly flexed in order to maintain your balance throughout your golf swing. Not enough flex results in greater spine angle (in order to sole the club) which in turn results in too steep of a swing angle. Too much flex results in too little of a spine angle and consequently a flat swing.
Hips & Back: Bend from hips. Don’t curl with your abdominals. Bending from hips keeps your back flat and at the correct angle. This creates a consistent axis that your swing will revolve around.
Shoulders: Your right shoulder will be slightly lower than the left because your right hand is lower on the grip. As such your spine will tilt slightly to the right… but keep your back flat.
Head: An extension of the line established by proper back and spine alignment. Don’t tuck your chin. Among other things tucking your chin will get it in the way of your shoulder turn and either cause a loss of power or a movement of your head as your left shoulder tries to turn through.
When you begin learning this posture for the first time or re-addressing your posture after perhaps developing some bad habits, it will feel a bit unnatural. Be patient, and persistent, allow your muscles some time to acclimate and strengthen.
Posture is extremely important to the success and consistency of your golf shots.
Don’t build your swing on a house of cards.

Fix My Golf Swing

Chicks dig the long ball, that's a fact! If you're like me, you're having trouble with drives that are not long and are often shanked into someone's backyard! These simple techniques might seem very basic, but often go overlooked. Let's discuss some factors that go into a good, straight, LOOOONG drive...
1. Weight Shift - Your swing starts with a basic shifting of weight. You have to imagine there is a line running directly up from the ball on the tee. Try to shift your front shoulder behind that imaginary line in your backswing, without shifting your hips. In other words, use your upper torso only. Now you're in a good position to begin your downswing. Again, imagine that line and as you follow through, shift your upper torso and back shoulder through the line. If this is executed correctly, in addition to a good weight shift, you will also have a good turn through the ball!
2. Square Clubface - It amazes me how often this easy correction remains a problem for some golfers. If you clubface is not in the direction you need it to be on your downswing, you will never hit a straight ball. Your arms and wrists have a tendency to shift or 'roll' in your backswing. Have someone watch and make sure that your clubface is square at the top of your backswing. If it isn't, you will have to straighten it during the downswing, creating numerous timing problems. You don't want this to happen. Having that square face before you start to come though the ball can make all the difference in the world.
3. Stabilize - Your front foot/knee has alot to do with your drive power, believe it or not. The reason is because it keeps your hips from turning too much. If you have your front leg stabilized on the ground during your follow through, your hips won't be able to turn or open too much, thus preventing an undesirable shot. Just concentrate on not colapsing that front knee, and you should produce more torque needed for that extra yardage!
4. Shoulder Turn - One of the keys to a long accurate shot is maximizing your shoulder turn, and minimizing your hip turn. Many novice golfers don't realize how important this is. One way to accomplish this is to concentrate on your left leg now and make sure that it doesn't slide to the right during your backswing. Your rear leg/knee needs to remain firm and flexed throughout the entire motion.
5. Hands - Hand release is the final point I'd like to stress. To check this, take a short backswing. When your club and hands are about waist high, look as though you are shaking hands with your thumb pointing up in the air. As you swing down into the follow through, make sure your hands are doing the same thing that they did on the backswing. Make certain that your thumb is still up. This technique ensures that you use your hands properly and that the release is true.
Golf is a very challenging game. But with proper technique and attention to detail, anyone can improve their game if they are willing to take the time to correct those 'easy-to-fix' mistakes!

Getting The Distance On The Driver You Deserve

It’s a common discussion, lament for some, a wish for others… How do I get more distance out of my driver?
Essentially, we all do right? Want to squeeze a few extra yards out of our driver. Big ‘ol long drives right down the middle of the fairway will do wonders for your confidence while administering blows to your competitors. And not only that… a 7 or 8 iron into the green offers a much better chance at a birdie opportunity than does a 5 or 6 iron… the shorter the approach shot the better.
So, all you need to do is swing harder… right?
Wrong… if that were the case we would all resolve our distance problems tomorrow.
Yes, developing a greater clubhead speed could be a possibility and would seem to be the answer. But, more often than not swing harder usually at the very least will produce a snap hook or a banana ball. So, although clubhead speed is a crucial ingredient, physically swinging harder isn’t the correct answer.
Allowing your body and mechanics to generate more clubhead speed is the focus. Not making your body and mechanics do it.
Driving for distance is timing and technique that generates clubhead speed at the precise moment by timing the release of much stored energy that you develop through proper swing mechanics… not bigger muscles.
For starters widen your stance just a bit… don’t overdo it … just widen a bit to give your self a bit wider foundation from which to work.
Position the ball just inside the heel of your front foot. With the driver you actually want to make contact with the ball with the upswing part of your swing arc. Also, open your lead foot up just a bit (rotate your toes toward the target). This will allow your hips to clear much more easily.
Work on taking a smooth one piece take-away with the shoulders, arms and hands. This will not only promote smooth consistent rhythm be will also provide for a longer wider arc which is a key to distance.
If you’ve implemented the one piece take-away and long flowing arc correctly, at the top of your swing your upper back and shoulders will be facing the target.
The transition from the top of the swing is an element you don’t want to rush or force with hand and arm action. It is this hand and arm action from here where people “swing harder” at the ball and as such… produce bad results.
Let the downswing commence with your weight transfer beginning from the back to the font foot while your lead hip also begins to rotate toward the target. Trust me… the shoulders, arms, and hands will obediently follow. By doing this you will maintain your proper angles longer and keep the energy stored for proper release timing.
Earlier, I mentioned that you actually want to contact the ball on your upswing. A good drill and test to see if you are doing this is to see how many drives you can execute without having to replant your tee or even get a new one because the one you just hit … you broke.
When your swing begins to come together with the driver, you’ll be able to his successive drives with disturbing your tee much at all. In essence, you’ll be swinging through the ball and not at the ball… which is what we want.

9 Golf Downswing Tips To Improve Your Golf Swing

The golf downswing is probably the most important, yet least understood part of a golf swing. People get mixed advice regarding how to improve their golf swing because of the way people usually analyze this phase of golf playing. Actually, the downswing is not really that complicated a matter if you know some few guidelines that could help you do this step right.
Here are some golf downswing tips:
1. Check your golf stance. When you do your downswing be sure to position your feet so that they are shoulder-width apart. Your shoulders should also be aligned with the target. A good guideline is to have your right foot point straight while your left foot is pointed slightly left. Be sure that your elbows are kept as naturally relaxed as possible.
2. The right downswing mechanics should result into a very powerful swing that is aligned with the intended direction of flight. To do this, you should keep your shoulders square during the impact, and for more power, keep it fractionally closed.
3. Remember to grip the golf club properly. If you are right handed, you should hold the club using the left hand, putting the thumb aligned with the club's shaft. The line formed between your index finger and thumb should point towards your own right eye. Lastly, wrap your left hand with the right hand while resting the left thumb into the right palm.
4. Check you golf downswing mechanics. Your downswing should begin with the hips. Watch the ball closely and keep our head behind it with your follow through. Practice this both without the ball and check how it affects your performance.
5. It is very important to remember that the club-head and the shaft are to be kept behind your hands during your downswing. This position helps your hands to sense and anticipate the release of the entire movement.
6. Keep your right hand at bay. Using your right hand prematurely will destroy the timing of delivery as well as the line of the club down to the ball. This usually results into miss-hit and inaccurate shots.
7. You should hold the shoulders in that fully-turned stance while the left arm and hand starts swinging down. This makes certain a good line of the club through the golf ball. If you turn your shoulders even just for a little during the start of the downswing, you could destroy the line of the club down to the boll because the club would be looped out of the intended path. This can also damage the ability of the left hand and arm to swing.
8. When doing your downswing, your left arm and hand should not be propelled downward because of the body and shoulder action. Instead it should swing down freely and independently from your shoulders.
9. Practice all these tips - the stance, the grip, the mechanics - in the driving range before heading out to the course. Keep making adjustments until you are sure that you are feel right about your downswing. Have a buddy check out everything to make sure that you are not just guessing.
Improving your downswing is not as difficult as it seems. With patience and determination, plus having these guidelines in mind, you can develop a great downswing that will improve your performance.

Trying to think of keeping your left elbow in, right elbow tucked, take the clubhead past the right knee. . . right knee flexed, wrist cocks when the shaft is parallel, keep turning till your chin is under your left shoulder. . . shaft pointing at target, start down slow, shift weight to your left foot, tuck right elbow into hip. . . delay the uncocking of your wrists, keep your head down, release the club, flat left wrist. . . etc., are all thoughts that should not be part of the golf swing.Can you perform the simple act of walking while thinking of firing each individual muscle or each process that it takes to raise and lower your foot to the ground? This is absurd. Your conscious mind is not capable of performing these complex actions. Your subconscious mind is the motivator for your responsive body movements. Overload the conscious, and you induce doubt!And doubt, my friends, is the enemy of your golf game.
Sometimes, when all our doubts, fears and insecurities wrap ourselves up, we always come up with the idea of “I wish I was somebody else.” More often than not, we think and believe that someone or rather, most people are better than us.- when in reality, the fact is, most people are more scared than us.
You spot a totally eye-catching girl sitting by herself at a party, casually sipping on a glass of Asti Spumanti. You think to yourself, “she looks so perfectly calm and confident.” But if you could read thru her transparent mind, you would see a bunch of clouds of thoughts and you might just be amazed that she’s thinking “are people talking about why I am seated here alone?... Why don’t guys find me attractive? …I don’t like my ankles, they look too skinny… I wish I was as intelligent as my best friend.”We look at a young business entrepreneur and say “Wooh… what else could he ask for?” He stares at himself at the mirror and murmurs to himself, “I hate my big eyes… I wonder why my friends won’t talk to me… I hope mom and dad would still work things out.”
Isn’t it funny? We look at other people, envy them for looking so outrageously perfect and wish we could trade places with them, while they look at us and think the same thing. We are insecure of other people who themselves are insecure of us. We suffer from low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence and lose hope in self improvement because we are enveloped in quiet desperation. Sometimes, you notice that you have an irritating habit like biting off your finger nails, having a foul mouth, and you – of all people, are the last to know.
I have a friend who never gets tired of talking. And in most conversations, she is the only one who seems to be interested in the things she has to say. So all of our other friends tend to avoid the circles whenever she’s around, and she doesn’t noticed how badly she has became socially handicapped – gradually affecting the people in her environment.
One key to self improvement is to LISTEN and TALK to a trusted friend. A golfing buddy who you find comfort in opening up with even the most gentle topics you want to discuss. Ask questions like “do you think I am ill-mannered?”, “Do I always sound so argumentative?”, “Do I talk too loud?”, “Does my breath smell?”, “Do I ever bore you when were together?”. In this way, the other person will obviously know that you are interested in the process of self improvement. Lend her your ears for comments and criticisms and don’t give her answers like “Don’t exaggerate! That’s just the way I am!” Open up your mind and heart as well. And in return, you may want to help your friend with constructive criticism that will also help him or her improve themselves.
One of Whitney Houston’s songs says “Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all.” True enough. In order to love others, you must love yourself too. Remember, you cannot give what you do not have.
Before telling other people some ways on how to improve themselves, let them see that you yourself are a representation and a product of self improvement. Self improvement makes us better people, we then inspire other people, and then the rest of the world will follow.
Stop thinking of yourselves as second-rate beings. Forget the repetitive thought of “If only I was richer… if only I was thinner” and so on. Accepting your true self is the first step to self improvement. We need to stop comparing ourselves to others only to find out at the end that we’ve got 10 more reasons to envy them.
We all have our insecurities. Nobody is perfect. We always wish we had better things, better features, better body parts, etc. But life need not to be perfect for people to be happy about themselves. Self improvement and loving yourself is not a matter of shouting to the whole world that you are perfect and you are the best. It’s the virtue of acceptance and contentment. When we begin to improve ourselves, we then begin to feel contented and happy.

Tiger Woods Can't Match the Mental Toughness of a 14 Year Old Girl!

What is mental toughness? Is it being able to grind out a good score when things aren't going so well on the course? Or is it the mental ability to stay strong and committed in spite of distractions and on-course circumstances?
Of course it is both of these things and more. Yet mental toughness isn't something you simply acquire in the spur of the moment or when you "think you need it." No, it's more of an overall mindset. A perspective on the game that allows you to tap another level within your mental game.
Mental toughness is developed and built over time. Once you have a degree of mental toughness, access to it when it matters becomes easier and easier. Like any new skill it habituates over time. An increased inner resolve that generates consistent, confident swings.
Do you have the mental toughness of a 14-year-old-girl? I don't think even Tiger does.
Seriously. Is your golfing mindset solid and committed in the many scenarios that unfold in your game? Do you have as strong a mind as young MacKinzie Kline, the 14-year-old golfing phenom? She is incredibly mentally tough.
She was born with only three valves in her heart and her kidney was on the wrong side of her body. Having gone through several operations in her life, she built a toughness. She went on to qualify for the Women's Amateur at the age of 14. She's already had three aces — and one of them was caught on film!
Yet as she continued to play she began to feel extremely short of breath. She was forced to take an oxygen tank with her as she played and use it between holes. Nothing would stop her from competing. Imagine lugging an oxygen tank around the course with you and remaining focused on each shot!
Concerned, the doctors investigated what might be causing her shortness of breath and discovered she had a hole in her heart which they had missed some time before that. So she underwent another operation.
She has a mental toughness that keeps her in her game and completely centered in each moment. Regardless of the circumstances. She has decided to play with a mindset that says, "I determine how I feel and how I'll perform, not the other player or what might be happening around me." MacKinzie Kline's mindset is the epitome of what mental toughness is.
It's almost routine to watch some frustrated whiner on the course toss his club 20 yards down the fairway after a bad shot. Or complain about all the bad breaks they get, why the bunker wasn't raked properly, how the cup wasn't cut right, and on and on. Player after player, when faced with some adversity, fold like a cheap suit and succumb to the inertia of their own inner weakness.
And then there's this 14-year-old girl with only three valves in her heart with more character and heart than any of us could hope to have.
Mental toughness is a state of mind that keeps your attention on each task. Each shot. Each moment. MacKinzie Kline is committed to her mental game. She is committed to herself.
She accepts complete responsibility for her results and places no blame outside of herself for her circumstances. Amazing. Most everyone would agree she has a right to feel self pity. That doesn't happen with her for even a moment. Her diminutive stature disguises a towering mental game giant.
She chooses how she'll experience herself on the golf course. Knowing mental toughness is a decision. A commitment to an inner ideal that is bigger then the outcome of any one shot, or game. She chose to accept ownership of her internal state and how she'll perform.
Tiger is unquestionably the dominant force in the game and is so mainly because of his mental toughness. Yet I would place young MacKinzie Kline along side him any day if forced to choose the mental game giants in golf.
It sure makes our own weakness on the course seem pathetic, doesn't it?

Grooved Golf Swing Series:Be The Correct Height To Pass The Club Head Beneath The Ball In A Bunker

When you apply your practiced swing, your grooved golf swing, the one you have developed to play your bunker shots, it is imperative that you think about what you are doing.
As I have said in previous articles, one of the most important aspect of the bunker golf shot is that you keep your body absolutely still when it comes to sideways movement and just swivel or turn your body as though you are in a tube.
It is fatal to allow your body to deviate to the left (right handers).
You will never get your club to pass deep to the ball if you sway to the left.
You will duff your shot.
So, you need a very good, solid base when you take up your stance.
Your feet must not be in danger of moving.
To achieve such a stance, dig and shuffle your feet into the sand so that you are now standing a couple of inches below the surface of the bunker.
Now, this means that when you make your swing, you will hit or dig a couple of inches below the ball which is far too deep.
Experiment with your swing and see what happens. You will probably dig too deeply as stated.
However, if you still are not able to pass our club head deeply enough beneath the ball.All you have to do is band your knees a little more more.
Then, if your new stance, a couple of inches below the surface of the bunker, makes you dig too deeply, because it has moved your hands nearer to the ball, just move your hands a little further down the shaft, towards the ground. Practice to get the right amount of movement down the shaft and then swing with confidence.

Tips For Improving Your Golf Swing Timing

To be good in golf, the person will not just swing as hard as possible to get the ball to land near the hole. The most important factor is timing because the body and mind has to work together to make it happen.
The player has probably heard this line said a million times but is this put into practice? Not all the time perhaps because the muscles are probably weak after going through a few holes with only a little energy left towards the end of the tournament.
The only way to be consistent in each swing is through practice. This is done not only with the club in the hand but also with stretch and strength exercises. The objective of this is to improve the build endurance and give flexibility to execute food golf swings.
The back swing is where everything begins. Since the player holds this with both hands and this appears heavy, many just release it too soon thus executing it purely. The person can improve here by holding it in this position for 10 seconds without moving then going through the motion until the follow through.
It is best to have someone observe the technique to check for errors or do this in front of the mirror. If this is too difficult, perhaps getting a video cam to record it then watching it later can help make the necessary connections.
Another exercise is called the overhead stretch. This is also important since the motion starts at the top of the head. Holding the club with the hands shoulder length apart and with the armpit-facing front is the proper way to do this.
It is also advisable to let the legs stand 2 feet from each other to promote balance. The individual must do this ten to fifteen times for about five to ten seconds each before bringing it down and doing it again.
The shoulder is the most part of the body that gets injured in golfers. This may happen due to overuse, which can be avoided by stretching properly. The player will roll the shoulder a number times forward and the same on the opposite arm.
This will prove to be useful for both arms as the individual will swing from one side to the next in getting the ball off the ground and into the intended target.
There are two other things that will help in the timing during each swing. The first is a good shoulder turn that will create a coil and guide the ball in the direction where it is supposed to go.
The second is the position of the chin is also important during each swing. It is advisable to keep the chin up ad not down because this allows the left arm to move freely across the chest. Studies have shown this will provide the player a wide arc that is needed in hitting the ball.
When the individual has developed strength in the upper body, it is time to do some practice swings. It is best to do a few slow ones first then increase the tempo later on.
If the ball is able to go in the same direction as the previous ones, then the individual has got it. This should be practiced as often as possible so that this will be easy when it comes during the tournament.

The Four Basics of Any Golf SwingBy Jack Moorehouse
When we think about the basics of the golf swing, we usually think about ball position, stance, grip, and so on. In other words, we think about the swing's physical mechanics. That's only natural, because its what most golf pros focus on in their golf lessons and what golf magazines highlight in their articles on the golf swing. It's what I write about the most in my golf tips as well.
But not everyone agrees that these are the true basics of the golf swing. For many, the true basics of the swing are something quite different, something that has nothing to do with the physical mechanics of the swing. For these people, a swing's true basics are four components-plane, centering, radius, and face. Golf instruction sessions focusing on these concepts are as helpful as golf lessons on the swing's mechanics, maybe even more helpful
Plane
Most golfers have heard of the concept of plane, but are confused as to how it applies to the golf swing. Plane is defined by the angle your club creates when it is ground at address. To master accuracy, the club must remain on this plane, especially while it approaches the ball on the downswing. (Actually, two planes-one formed by the takeaway and the other by the downswing-are involved in swinging a club, but the second plane is key.) This plane is the most powerful and direct route to the swing, as I discuss in my golf tips. Coming back to the ball above or below this plane results in pulls and slices.
Centering
Every swing has a center to it, a foundation defined by your head and your spine. If you want to hit accurate golf shots, this foundation must remain steady. Watch Tiger or any of the pros on TV and you'll see how steady their heads and spines remain throughout their swings. This foundation has two angles to it. One is the angle your spine creates with your hips at address. The other involves the lateral movement of your head. Focus on preventing both your head from moving unnaturally one way or the other and your spine from moving up or down, and you will produce better results.
Radius
Radius is the distance between the lead shoulder and the clubhead. You must keep radius intact, if you want to hit good quality shots. The key is releasing your wrists at the right time. Most amateurs release their wrists early, forcing the shaft ahead of the lead arm before impact. An early release causes you to hit the ball thin, or even worse, mis-hit it altogether. If you execute the proper sequence of movements in the downswing, you'll maintain radius.
Face
The ball travels in the direction in which your clubface is pointing at the moment of impact, minus the effect of sidespin. You must attain the same clubface position at impact that you establish at address, which is why you need to align your club properly. The key to doing this is matching the position of your hands at impact with the position of your hands at address. If you grip the club on the right side of the shaft, your hands must be on the right side of the club when you hit the ball; otherwise, you'll mis-hit.
Conclusion
Is one basic more important than another? Not really, as I tell players who take my golf lessons. They all must be executed properly, if you want to achieve a powerful, repeatable swing. Now that you are aware of them and how they contribute to your swing, try filming yourself some day and see how well you maintain them during your swing. Also note how well you hit the ball.
Plane, centering, radius, and face-these aren't the usual basics you talk about when discussing the golf swing, but they are critical. While the physical mechanics of the swing, like ball position, stance, and grip, are key, so are these four components. Master both sets and you'll achieve accuracy and consistency every time, lowering your golf handicap in the process

Golfers: Make the Mid Irons Payoff

I have always liked the medium irons, the four-, five-, and six-, for they are the clubs which come into use so often in tournament play. Also, the five-iron is the dividing iron between the medium and short irons, and it is an excellent club to practice with when learning the iron game. It has just enough loft and distance to enable the beginner to acquire the feel for the entire golf swing.
I've spent hundreds of hours practicing the medium irons, and I feel they are a strong part of my game.
DISTANCE
The medium irons are used for distances up to 170 yards under normal conditions. In other words, you should figure the regular distance for a six-iron to be 150 yards, a five-iron 160 yards, and a four-iron 170 yards. As we pointed out in the chapter on short irons, there is a maximum, medium, and minimum yardage for the medium irons as well as the short irons. Every golfer should have a pretty good idea how much he can get out of each club, and the only way he can find this out is through practice and experimenting with the various clubs.
USING THE MEDIUM IRONS
THE ADDRESS.
The square stance is used for medium-iron shots. Both feet should be on an imaginary line that runs parallel to the line of flight. The weight is equally divided between your two feet, and the ball is positioned slightly left of center between the feet. The upper part of your arms should be in close to your chest, and the right elbow should be relaxed and pointing to your right hip. In this position you are absolutely "square" to the ball, that is, your feet, hips, and shoulders are on a line paralleling the line of flight.
THE BACKSWING.
After settling into your stance and making the minor adjustments of the feet, body, arms, and hands that are necessary to become completely comfortable over the ball, "tune" yourself up for the backswing by waggling several times. Then swing the clubhead away from the ball in a one-piece movement. I have the feeling that my shoulders and the middle part of my arms dominate my backswing. As the shoulders turn away from the ball, the arms simply follow the turn, thus bringing the club-head inside the line of flight.
As the hands reach about belt-high, an upward cocking action of the wrists takes place, moving the clubshaft into a vertical position as the weight is swung to the right side. The right elbow is pointing down and close to the right side at this stage of the swing. The left knee turns in toward the right knee to let the left side turn away from the ball freely.
At the top of the swing, about 85 per cent of your weight should be on your right side. Remember, however, that your weight should be centered on the inside of the right foot and leg, not the outside. The shoulders have turned a full 90 degrees, but the hips have turned only about 45 degrees. This is because you want a little live tension in the left side so it will snap back and lead the left-side action into the start of the downswing.
If the left hip is allowed to turn farther than 45 degrees, the entire swing is thrown out of balance and the tendency is to swing the weight to the out¬side of the right foot. An extreme effort must then be made to shift the weight back to the left side on the downswing—quite a physical chore if you are off balance at the top of the swing.
THE DOWNSWING.
At the start of the downswing, there is a slight lateral shifting of the weight, initiated by the left hip, to the left side. The left heel is planted firmly on the ground, and the weight is centered in the middle part of your feet and toward the heels. The head is steady and behind the ball. The feeling should be that the head or neck is the axis, or hub, of the swing, and the shoulders are turning around this axis throughout the swing. Do not let the entire body move laterally into the shot. When this happens, the body sets up a blocking action so that the hands and arms cannot function properly, and a pushed or sliced ball usually results.
Halfway down, the left arm and shoulder have begun to exert a strong pull-down action which generates a little extra clubhead speed. This brings the hands and arms into the hitting area in a fully cocked position. The body and hands are now set for the explosive hitting action through the ball, which is primarily applied by the right forearm and hand.
In one brief instant your hands are behind you, and in another split second they are in front of you, with the right hand turning over the left.
while the arms are fully extended toward the target. The left hip has turned out of the way, yet the head and shoulders are still behind the ball. At this point, the right shoulder begins to pull the head and body into an upright position so that a balanced swing can be completed with a high finish of the hands and arms. Almost all weight should be on the outside of the left foot, and toward the heels, at the finish. If it isn't, you have a balance problem and you should work to correct it. Remember, you should always try to work your weight back in through your heels throughout your swing.
